WAZ launches most ambitious regional website in Germany

The long-awaited regional news portal for the western part of Western Germany called DerWesten.de was finally launched yesterday. The portal merges the former separate websites of the regional papers of the WAZ Mediengruppe into one website for the region near Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund.
Aiming at a younger audience, DerWesten will incorporate user-generated content and articles from about 900 journalists, as Katharina Borchert, editor-in-chief and one of Germany's top bloggers, stated in an interview for FAZ.NET: "The idea is to make the audience participate in exciting discussions and to win and keep readers that won't read newspapers anyway - with the hope that those readers like the editorial quality of DerWesten.de, if not they will look for news elsewhere."
